  5.     When Alaska Governor Walter Hickel was elected last November
  6. as the candidate of the Alaskan Independence Party, nobody
  7. expected him to do much to further its secessionist platform.
  8. Nobody, that is, except a vocal faction of the tiny fringe
  9. party. Angry that Hickel has not done enough to detach Alaska
  10. from the U.S., the group is mounting a campaign to have Hickel
  11. and Lieutenant Governor Jack Coghill recalled from office,
  12. charging that their nomination was illegal.

  14.     Hickel joined the Independence ticket just minutes before
  15. the filing deadline for last fall's election and signaled
  16. throughout the campaign that he did not share its views. Though
  17. Hickel has been ignoring the campaign, Coghill has not. As head
  18. of the division of elections, he has refused to give the recall
  19. committee any information about what legal steps must be taken
  20. to eject an official.
